Artist Bio:
Fugli is a pseudo-medieval musician, scribe and artificer. With layered levels of simple instruments, his sounds are often uniquely archaic. While some of of his music is entirely original, most of his tracks are personal arrangements of renaissance and medieval melodies from antiquity. There is much more information to be found about him at http://povera.com.

Full fathom'd five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Hark! now I hear themDing-dong, bell. |

Traditional:
have you seen the ghost of John?
long white bones and the flesh all gone.
Oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh
wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?
Fugli:
The English Isles were his domain.
He did not abdicate his reign
Oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh
War swept ore the Norman plains.
Papal homage did demand
that he obey ho-ly command
Oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh
Excommunication was his reprimand.
In distant cloister did he partake
Where a monk did plot his life to take
Oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh
of a poisonous drought, his thirst did slake |

The Reformation Polka
words by Robert Gebel (recorded with permission)
Original tune is Supercalifragilistic-expialidocious
V1
When I was just ein junger Mann I studied canon law;
While Erfurt was a challenge, it was just to please my Pa.
Then came the storm, the lightning struck, I called upon Saint Anne,
I shaved my head, I took my vows, an Augustinian! Oh, -
Chorus
Papal bulls, indulgences, and transubstantiation -
Speak your mind against them and face excommunication!
Nail your theses to the door, let's start a Reformation!
Papal bulls, indulgences, and transubstantiation!
V2
When Tetzel came near Wittenberg, St. Peter's profits soared,
I wrote a little notice for the All Saints' Bull'tin board:
"You cannot purchase merits, for we're justified by grace!
Here's 95 more reasons, Brother Tetzel, in your face!" Oh-
V3
They loved my tracts, adored my wit, all were exempleror;
The Pope, however, hauled me up before the Emperor.
"Are these your books? Do you recant?" King Charles did demand,
"I will not change my Diet, Sir, God help me here I stand!" Oh-
V4
Duke Frederick took the Wise approach, responding to my words,
By knighting "George" as hostage in the Kingdom of the Birds.
Use Brother Martin's model if the languages you seek,
Stay locked inside a castle with your Hebrew and your Greek! Oh-
V5
Let's raise our steins and Concord Books while gathered in this place,
And spread the word that 'catholic' is spelled with lower case;
The Word remains unfettered when the Spirit gets a chance,
So come on, Katy, drop your lute, and join us in our dance! Oh- |

They were huddled together and trembling, when the spirit wind came.
they were told to expect a miracle. It leapt between them like flame.
To each one was given the gift of speech, the gospel message proclaimed.
The crowds all stared in bewilderment. Their varied tongues were the same.
Chorus:
Veni Sancti Spiritus.
Holy Spirit Come.
Sanctus Sanctus Dominus,
You are the holy one.
Some of the people among them were skeptical, and blamed it on the new wine.
But Peter stood ups and said we must have faith, now give the scripture its time.
Chorus
Now the Spirit is poured out upon us all. We prophesy and dream dreams,
waiting for portents in heaven and signs below. Our world is not as it seems.

It was a lover and his lass,
With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino,
That o'er the green corn-field did pass
In the spring time, the only pretty ring time,
When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding:
Sweet lovers love the spring.
Between the acres of the rye,
With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino
These pretty country folks would lie,
In the spring time, the only pretty ring time,
When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding:
Sweet lovers love the spring.
This carol they began that hour,
With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino,
How that a life was but a flower
In the spring time, the only pretty ring time,
When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding:
Sweet lovers love the spring.
And therefore take the present time,
With a hey, and a ho, and a hey nonino;
For love is crowned with the prime
In the spring time, the only pretty ring time,
When birds do sing, hey ding a ding, ding:
Sweet lovers love the spring. |

On this joyful Christmas Day
Sing fum, fum, fum
On this joyful Christmas Day
Sing fum, fum, fum
For a blessed Babe was born
Upon this day at the break of morn
In a manger poor and lowly
Lay the Son of God most holy
Fum, Fum, Fum!
Thanks to God for holidays
Sing fum, fum, fum
Thanks to God for holidays
Sing fum, fum, fum
Now we all our voices raise
And sing a song of grateful praise
Celebrate in song and story
All the wonders of His glory
Fum, fum, fum! |

Lully lullay thou tiny child
By by lully lullay
O sisters too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we do sing
By, by, lully, lullay/
Herod the king, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His men of might, in his own sight,
All young children to slay.
That woe is me, poor child for thee
And ever morn and day
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
By by lully lullay.
Lully lullay thou little tiny child,
By by lully lullay |

Willie take your little drum, Robin take your flute and come
When we hear the music play, Tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan
When we hear the music play, Noel, Noel, we say.
Long ago was born a King, to Him we now do sing,
Play your music sweet and clear, Tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan
Play your music sweet and clear, sounding Noels of good cheer.
He was born on Christmas Day, celebrate with us, come play,
Let the music sound again, Tu-re-lu-re-lu, pat-a-pat-a-pan
Let the music sound again, merry Christmas to all men. |

Il Est Ne
This CD contains a collection of some very old Christmas carols. Every year, as Christmas approaches, we hear music written for the season, both old and new. In this age of ever growing popularity of secular carols, I have compiled this brief collection of some older and more reverent - one might even consider them more relevant - songs commemorating the promise, the prophecy, and the birth of the Christ child. The more familiar melodies I have offered without words, while some of the less familiar are offered with vocal accompaniment. It is my hope that this collection may remind everyone that there once was a time when even secular music acknowledged the presence of God in our lives.

On the Woad
This CD music collection is a mixed assortment stemming from many sources. The sort of music one hears at a modern medieval faire is rarely of the actual medieval variety. If the songs were medieval, many patrons would not suffer listening to them for long. The language alone would prove indecipherable to the common fairgoer. Instead, what you hear is a conglomeration of old songs and melodies interspersed with modern songs and variations played on anachronistic instruments.
Following in that tradition, these recordings range from extremely traditional to just plain silly. Some of the melodies have been customized, others creatively appropriated or parodied, and most of the instruments are only modern day cousins of what may have been available in medieval times. They are plucked, pounded, shaken, rattled, and otherwise played in relatively simple manners as might simulate a faire performance.
I hope you enjoy these recordings as much as I have enjoyed making them. For more information you can read the review of this CD on Modern Bard at http://modernbard.org/reviews/onthewoad.htm . |
