Artist Bio:

This is a new band of disillusioned idealists and disappointed optimists fronted by Scottish singer/songwriter Tom McKean and based in London, UK.

It’s been an interesting year or two, dear reader. Our debut single was voted Record of the Week on Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie’s popular BBC Radio 2 show here in the UK. It was also Record of the Day on influential music industry website Record of the Day (a more appropriate name for it we can’t imagine) and garnered some great reviews from the press. We’ve been playing packed-to-the-rafters shows and enjoyed last summer’s festivals where, most memorably, we just about made it through a haze of sunburn and very strong cider at Glastonbury.

We picked up a manager along the way and found ourselves in Texas earlier this year making our debut album with Grammy-nominated producer John Congleton. He’s worked with artists as varied as Modest Mouse, Antony and the Johnsons, The Polyphonic Spree, Explosions in the Sky, Marilyn Manson and Erykah Badu as well as more mainstream acts like Bono and Celine Dion. John also fronts anarchic noise rockers The Paper Chase.

We're delighted with the results and you can here some of the tracks here on Indie Heart. It should be out early 2010.

We wrote, rehearsed and demoed the album (and live in) a house that used to be the home of legendary poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath. Peter O’Toole was a long-standing lodger (in what's now Bobby's bedroom) and he, Hughes and Plath would drink and read poetry late into the night with friends David Lean, Jacques Tati and Albert Finney. Much of our record was conceived in the same room under similar circumstances and we like to think that we're in some way carrying on the tradition of the house.

Dylan Thomas was often to be found drinking round the corner in our local pub. He inspired our track “Gazing at the Dying of the Light” which quotes directly from his poem Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night.

Through the vagaries of luck and hard work we’ve found ourselves making the kind of music we always wished we could. We very much hope you enjoy it.

All the best,
Tom McKean & the Emperors

One thing on my Mind

Beautiful mama
With the fever in your eyes
Your lips spell trouble
And your dress undignified
You might be hazardous to every man alive
But right now Ive just one thing on my mind

Dangerous lady with the devil by your side
You might be lethal but Im quite prepared to die
You might be my nemesis and I should try to hide
But Ive just one thing on mhy mind
You might be treacherous and terribly unkind
But Ive just one thing on my mind

You might be dangerous, the one theyre trying to find
But Ive just one thing on my mind
You might be treacherous and terribly unkind
But Ive just one thing on my mind

A little Something

Well, first thing in the morning
And then last thing at night
Well I take a little something
For the pain inside

Then at 8am
And at 5 past 10
Well I take a little something
For the pain again

Feels like this little something
Is my only friend

Then at quarter to 11
And twice before 3
Well I take a little something
And it takes a little something out of me

But tonight just after sunset
Around 11.15
Ill take as many little somethings
As Ive taken in the past 2 weeks

Ill take all the little somethings I can eat

Then I will sleep
Yes I will sleep in peace

And if I make it through till morning
If this is not the end
Then Ill take a little something
To ease the pain again

This is the Year

You havent been around in a while
And it seems like years since I last saw your smile

I know Im the one whos been acting strange
But this is the year for things to change

I havent been around like I said I would
And now its hard to prove that my intentions are good

I know Im the one whos been acting strange
But this is the year for things to change

Hold on to Me

A preacher, he prays for his saviour
A preacher, he prays for his faith
An old man wakes up for the sunrise
Just in case its his last day

Far away a man just daydreams
A runaway plays games cause hes free
And an angel tries to meet her maker
And runs into the stormy sea

Would you just come to me
Would you just come to me
Terrorised in the night by the ghosts
That live in your dreams
Would you just come to me

A young man, he waits at the station
With a suitcase that hell never need
And his girl, she waits for the phone to ring
For a call that shell never receive

So I must show you my devotion
Cause Im not scared like I used to be
And Ill hold you like the ocean
Holds on to the sea

Would you hold on to me
Would you hold on to me
When your eyes are on fire
Terrified by the things that youve seen
Would you hold on to me
