Artist: Ray Woodruff
Ray Woodruff is an eclectic acoustic folk musician who likes to steal the shiny bits from various musical styles and use them to build on a foundation of country blues and the traditional music of the British Isles. Combining unique, lyrical and improvisational guitar work with a literate blend of historical and contemporary lyrical settings, he creates rambling, striving, searching stories that focus on sudden moments and single lives. Many of the characters in those stories are contemporary, working within the normal folk music frame of love, lost love and politics. But Ray's strong belief in history informing the present tends to enter into a number of his stories as well. A 14th century Italian artist can represent a modern artist's search for relevance. A traveling dancer during the great depression can voice the current struggles to get by. A worker pounding spikes on the Transcontinental Railroad can comment on the scams, swindles and fortunes of our era. His strong belief in improvisation means that no two performances come out quite the same - the intensity, the delivery and the guitar work shifting to adapt to the moment.

Perhaps unfortunately for my songwriting, I am also rather happy in my personal life. That means that, in order to stop myself writing cute and sappy songs about my girlfriend, I am writing more and more from fiction and from history. As I post new tunes I will likely also post some explanation of where they came from in the blog at www.raywoodruffmusic.com.

Bought myself a Stetson hat, a nice three quarter coat
I untie a horse to fly, a red scarf for my throat
Some spurs, some boots, some drinks, some hoots, a spread at supper time
When tomorrow comes, well, I won't have a dime.

Ride down the Rock Island line, the expressman pops the safe
Then I'm by the water side to see the light of fate
I'll be drenched down with salvation, hell, I'll lay it on the line
Till tomorrow comes and I don't have a dime

Knees tight to the saddle, I catch up to the train
I'll holding my nuts and keeping my guts and riding off in the rain
And back in town I'll show you to all of those lights you never knew
Till I rub one dime together like a fool.

Folding up the deck again and I'll cash in the chips
Just enough to buy a round, I'll only drink in sips
Till she's like some Mona Lisa with a face a bit equine
And tomorrow comes and I don't have a dime

Knees tight to the saddle, I catch up to the train
I'll holding my nuts and keeping my guts and riding off in the rain
And back in town I'll show you to all of those lights you never knew
Till I rub one dime together like a fool.

Much too much too much to gain and far too much to lose
Deep in the saddle again and nearing the caboose
I'll be rich tomorrow day but I'll be poor tomorrow night
And wondering why I never have a dime.

Knees tight to the saddle, I catch up to the train
I'll holding my nuts and keeping my guts and riding off in the rain
And back in town I'll show you to all of those lights you never knew
Till I rub one dime together like a fool.

If that mean old river keeps flowing
Swollen bank by the rain and the snow
If I keep on rolling home
Winter's coming and it won't take long.
If that mean old river keeps flowing
Swollen bank by the rain and the snow
If I keep on rolling home
Well, there won't be no home to go.

Drinking flat foot in Tennessee
Saw her lovely by a willow tree
Just hoping she might see me
Counting time by the riverside
And I'd set my life to rights
Find a job and tuck in tight
Push the mornings back all night
In my house by the banks so wide

If that mean old river keeps flowing
Swollen bank by the rain and the snow
If I keep on rolling home
Winter's coming and it won't take long.
If that mean old river keeps flowing
Swollen bank by the rain and the snow
If I keep on rolling home
Well, there won't be no home to go.

In St. Louis barring chords
To make a dime cuz I can't find more.
In a cheap dive room and board
Dreaming of her all night
Pack my bag up right and tight
When I'm finished and I'll drive all night
It's a hard, cold rain outside
In the beam of the one headlight.

If that mean old river keeps flowing
Swollen bank by the rain and the snow
If I keep on rolling home
Winter's coming and it won't take long.
If that mean old river keeps flowing
Swollen bank by the rain and the snow
If I keep on rolling home
Well, there won't be no home to go.

Every time that you hold that look
You're taken down easy in the second book
And my whole damn plot folds to silence in the night.

So I packed I stuff and I upped my sails
Bowling Brook was hazy so I hit that trail
The lamp posts shuttered as I took off for the light

Found a wall and I backed right up
What's the use in drinking but the harder stuff
You don't have to bother looking for the light stoned blind

One takes it easy another's too quick
One clutches his diamond and another his dick
This time I won't slow till the holding out is good and fine

Don't need the money, don't need the show
When it comes too easy it's time to go
And I'll be waiting for tomorrow by the Saint Street five and dime.

Come the moon, I'll take your bricks
Carve you out a home from paper and sticks
Witch willow for the walls and myrtle for the roof and beams

Dress us up in reeds and twine
Weave a tight cover for this love of mine
And press my damn watch with your rose in the bible seams

Don't need the money, don't need the show
When it comes too easy it's time to go
And I'll be waiting for tomorrow by the Saint Street five and dime.

Every time that you held that look
I took you down easy in the second book
And my whole damn plot fell to silence in the night.

Dime store tries and shallow sighs
Dusty road that ends in sun
Another town to feed the eyes
Another bar to feed the numb
Roads to you are long but true
And the waiting’s all but gone
Night will shade all roads that stray
I’ll be holding back the dawn.

Angels of the wood and rail
Cut the dusty swirls with speed
Blur the ground with sagebrush brown
Till the whistle pleads concrete
Roads to you are long but true
And the waiting’s all but gone
Night will shade all roads that stray
I’ll be holding back the dawn.

Midnight blues are nothing new
Just a life that’s held in pawn
Don’t count the days, don’t count the ways
I’ll be there before the dawn

Burning all to find the way
Across the iron bridge to town
In the wind and in the sway
And your grey stray Irish hound
Roads to you are long but true
And the waiting’s all but gone
Night will shade all roads that stray
I’ll be holding back the dawn.

I got a cape on my back, got a hero-sized chest
My green spandex uniform’s the one I like best
I fly through the air with no plane and no gun
To catch all the villains I’ve got to save you from.

Hey Metropolis, I’ve got better things to do
Hey Metropolis, than waste my life saving you
Like laying on the beach just watching the tide.
Hey Metropolis, why don’t you save your own hide?

I’d dream of a love in a green body suit
It could even be red, wouldn’t hurt her repute.
Just want to do more than patrol through your skies
Walk on your waters just so you can sleep tight

Hey Metropolis, I’ve got better things to do
Hey Metropolis, than make sure you make it through
Like laying in the tall grass just watching the sky
Why don’t you kiss my tights goodbye

Like laying in the sun, rolling in the grass.
Hey Metropolis, why don’t you just kiss my green ****?

I don’t want to heel at your beckon and call
I don’t really care if you need me at all
I’ve got better things to save in this town tonight
Cuz I’m sick of getting nothing here in my green tights

Hey Metropolis, I’ve got better things to do
Hey Metropolis, than waste my life saving you
Like laying in bed all day waiting for the night,
Hey Metropolis, I’m turning in my green tights.

If I take too long
Wake in the night and just leave at dawn
Bottle and save your face
Map every lane that your fingers trace

I can wait for the princess
Like I wait out the rains

Every candle flame
Freezes the bedroom mise en scene
Just a glance and a memory
And a trip at the door on your Mary Janes

I can wait for the princess
Like I wait out the rains

If I take too long
Wake in the night just to leave at dawn
Bottle and save your name
Pulling the door gently to it’s frame

I can wait for the princess
Like I wait out the rains

Through all the wishing the wailing the fighting the flailing
I can’t keep this up tonight.

Castle Garden from the green I signed on thin and lean
To head west for my stew
Lucky Omaha heard Sacramento call
And rode an iron horse through
Ladders through the plains hammers through the rains
Treated like a mindless old mule
reeling with the heat frostbit with the sleet
I’ll be your broken back fool.

Thomas Clark Durant still rolling in his junta
Can pave the plains with his stocks
I’ll gandy dance by day for a hell on wheels to lay
To pound the nail through the clock
Coughing in the smoke, an artist with three strokes
A 15 pound Nelson my tool.
John Henry on a pile of 4000 spikes a mile
I’ll be your broken back fool.
John Henry full of bile with 12000 strokes a mile
I’ll be your broken back fool.

Image: My Grain.jpg
I wish that you could see me down here in the dust
As you look up from your board meeting
If I were someone who had
Half the ledgers you add
I might not mind the taste of sand.

You say that you would be here face down in the mud
As you wash up your hands for dinner
For all your stripes and sorrow
I won’t be home tomorrow
As you commute to your desk job.

When my whole life is trying to stay above this ground
It’s nice to think you want this soil for your crown.

We’re sent to reenact the crusades in this town
I’m so glad you believe in something
I wish to god you were lazy
I’m pretty sure you’re crazy
Or maybe greed carries your cross.

When my whole life is trying to stay above this ground
It’s nice to think you want this soil for your crown.

Your bumper stickers cry for freedom and for blood
By jingo all the way to Baghdad
The cammo corporations
The business end of nations
Just hope I live to do your job.

When my whole life is trying to stay above this ground
It’s nice to think you want this oil for your crown.

Oh Lorraine, on the hood of your Monty Carlo
Oh Lorraine, Tight in skirt and sloe
Feel your fingers dampen flex down to your toes

Oh Lorraine drive out to the boardwalk
Oh Lorraine taut and cavalier
The ocean answers but you don’t want to hear

All the days claw at you like kind words
All the days crawl to keep you kind
But they can’t hear that voice behind your eyes

Oh Lorraine let the engine grumble
Oh Lorraine let the engine cry
And make this rearview town fade out of sight

Image: Two Head Smartbomb copy.jpg
Dinner’s cold and half uneaten
The fire’s died down to a sigh
If you could only reach the morning
You might feel awake and alive

And in the din sit you wonder
Looking out over the hills
What it’s like to be the thunder
To roll and to shake and thrill

So you’ll try and fall for anything
To change your life’s headwind
And every storm seems to change your mind
And leaves you tattered and thin-skinned.

Still your mind just wants to wander
Looking out over the fields
Now the apple trees, their fruit will fall
And autumn is tight on your heels

And you try and watch the light fade
And not think about a thing
As the rain washes the gutters and the wind
Tears at your wings

So you’ll try and fall for anything
To change your life’s headwind
And every storm seems to change your mind
And leaves you tattered and thin-skinned.

In the night when you awaken
Moved and shaken by the train
The front’s line cuts the dull sunrise
As you chase the edge of the rain

All the more it makes you wonder
Looking out at the gray sky
The train rumbles and the train it screams
And you try to sleep as you cry

So you’ll try and fall for anything
To change your life’s headwind
And every storm seems to change your mind
And leaves you tattered and thin-skinned.

Every time I call for you my beautiful one
I tumble down
Every time I hear your name my beautiful one
I tumble down

I will wish on you
I will wish on you

Every time I call your name and wish you here
I tumble down
Every time I reach out when the moon seems near
I tumble down

I will wish on you
I will wish on you
All I want and all I wish that Id do
I will wish on you

Every time I see your eyes in candle light
I tumble down
Every time you kiss me through the deepest night
I tumble down

I will wish on you
I will wish on you
Every hope and dream that I wish would come true
I will wish on you.

Image: Two Head Smartbomb copy.jpg
Search lights at sea
They strobe off the blades on the lea
Cut wind, throb with sound
And the weight of the waves pulling you down

And all your days
Have fallen by the waves and find you here
Breath strays in time.

Waste to a fault
On the oceans of your days breaths of salt
Burnt eyes search the lights
For a railing or a hand, some reason to fight

And all your days
Have fallen by the waves and find you here
Breath strays in time.

And all your days
Shackled to the dying and the brave
Theyll stray in time

All that youve loved
Leaves you straining for the lights searching above.

Toe the line, its your failing grace
Tie your hair back from your face
Dont look back, dont turn and see
If you must keep running, run to me

If you sigh or if you cough
And he seems not the least put off
From the light of the bright party
If you must keep running, run to me

If you don every gown they wear
If you burn in the cool night air
If you tire of each place to be
If you must keep running, run to me

If your words chase you through your dreams
If youve filled your foolscap reams
When you sense that its time to leave
If you must keep running, run to me

Ray, I really like this one. The lyrics are surprisingly much simpler than your usual, and your voice is sweet and clear...some fine singing and playing. Like I said...nice...
