Artist: Will Derryberry
California based troubadour, Will Derryberry began showing up in local clubs, stunning listeners with a brand of blues that leaned heavily on the styles of Robert Johnson, Ray Charles, and Eric Clapton. “When I was 5 years old, I heard BB King’s The Thrill is Gone, something happened to me. It’s oxymoronic, but as he sang that song, I got extremely excited!” His fretwork and soulful voice gained a strong following, and several years of refining his talent, he was signed onto the Sacramento based label, Fair Oaks Music. Thus teaming up with bass player Ian Kilpatrick, and drummer Baron Miller. The Will Derryberry Band was set in 1999. The trio went on to record, tour the United States; sell CDs in the tens of thousands and Receive moderate radio airplay on the Clear Channel broadcasting system, the largest radio broadcasting company in the country.
In 2003, Will’s focus was set on writing a solo folk/blues CD. That same year he released Roots. Will continued to travel and perform what many call his signature sound. Will even admits, “ After I recorded Roots, playing music got easier somehow, it was like I was able to be me.”
Along the way Will met up with artist manager/BMI published songwriter John Cordova (of Jc7 Productions), who caught Will performing in the San Francisco bay area, liked what he heard and suggested putting together a batch of musicians and songs for Will to record. Will was intrigued with the idea of collaborating and soon found himself recording tracks co-penned by Cordova and Lou Carlozo (of Blue Lit Souls fame). After months of writing and recording songs, Target of Your Favor was released.
“It was a new experiment for me, joining together with this team,” says Will of the collective that also included co-producer Danny Duncan and a series of seasoned session musicians. “It caused me to really shift gears musically and I found myself going away from the deep and dirty blues and folk into more of a pop/alternative rock direction. This was a fun challenge for me because I proved to myself that I could cross multiple genres and make it work.”
A year later, Will was back to writing and recording. “My favorite aspect of what I do is writing and recording songs. I like songs that are organic sounding, and actually have something to say.” Comparisons can be made with songwriters/bands Ray LaMontagne, Pete Yorn, and The Wallflowers.
Currently, Will is recording songs for a new CD entitled “Seven” and will be released sometime in early 2008.“I want to get back to writing those tunes where I can be vulnerable and real.” As well, Will continues his songwriting for film and TV recently placing his song “Seven” in NBC’s cop drama “Life” and "where Your Heart Lives" in NBC's "Friday Night Lights".
Will summarizes. “I just hope to keep finding opportunities to share my music with as many people as possible. I know that there is power in the stories and confessions of a well written lyric, as well, a melody that can take us to the place where our heart lives, struggles, and endures. Sharing this kind of song is my hope. We don’t need these songs however, but we all deeply want these kinds of songs because we have the innate desire to be connected with each other.”

It's time to get us back
I need you; you need me
This world ain't getting easier
Life still ain't fair
So, let's give up the past
And rest in our easy chair

Show me where your heart lives
In a society so cruel
At least I can live with you
In this tender place
Meant for you and me

It's time to get it out
The splinter from our eyes
Time isn't revolving
It's slipping away
So, let's give it all we got
Before we loose another day

Show me where your heart lives
Beneath the marquee scars
Inside your cookie jar
There's a tender place
Meant for you and me

Devotion in vigil light
We're fighting for our love tonight

This world ain't getting easier
Life still ain't fair
So, let's give up the past
And rest in our easy chair

Show me where your heart lives
Grow old and die with me
Into eternity
In this tender place
Meant for you and me

Seven choices all gone wrong
Seven wars and seven songs
A boy alone on Seventh Avenue
Bound up and can't breakthrough

Woe, Woe, Woe

Seven generations end
Seven hundred years of sin
Seven lovers choose to mend
The brokenness they've been in

Woe, Woe, Woe

Take these hands
Turn them around seven times
Point them in the right direction
Leading to perfection

Seven seconds, counting down
Seven evils taken down
Seven trumpets start to sound
The end is coming better gather ‘round

Woe, Woe, Woe

Take these hands
Turn them around seven times
Point them in the right direction
Leading to perfection

Listen, listen
Quiet your heart
A whisper, whisper
Is calling, is calling, calling

Take these hands
Turn them around seven times
Point them in the right direction
Leading to perfection

I am running, running away from you
I'm running, yes, running as I often do
Though, I need your helping hand
Still I'm playing like a one-man band

I am running
I'm hiding
I’m loosing, not winning
I'm a fool to think that I would
Pretending I'm living
At the beginning
Though, I've been
At the end for years
I'm still nothing
Without you

I am reeling, reeling the choices I made
I'm reeling, yes, reeling soaking wet on my parade
Would you still give your hand?
And join this broken band

I am running
I'm hiding
I’m loosing, not winning
I'm a fool to think that I would
Pretending I'm living
At the beginning
Though, I've been
At the end for years
I'm still nothing
Without you

Don't look back on Carolina
She gonna hit you with her hurricane
Don't go down to Georgia
She gonna to do more of the same
I've got to run back to California
California here I come

I am lost without her
A beacon is her laughter
All this time away feels like a sin
In her arms is to be born again
I've got to run back to California
California here I come

I'm gonna run in her field
Until all my wounds have all been healed
I'm gonna to dance, dance in her bright morning sun
Hand in hand, hand in hand as that sun goes down
Oh, so sweet
All is right
Down in my soul

Don't look back on Carolina
She gonna hit you with her hurricane
Don't go down to Georgia baby
She gonna do more of the same

Brother down the way asks her how she feels
It’s so hard to be real
Girl wants to know her state of mind
It’s so hard to be real
It's the same old story she tells
She's doing fine and well

How many times
Must she hide what's true
She is one of those
Colored blue

Big Bill sang it loud and clear
"It hurts me too"
It hit Sweet Baby James from behind
And he went to Carolina
But, She hides the truth from you
To say she's well just isn't true

How many times
Will she shy away from you
She is one of those
Colored blue

But, She hides the truth from you
She not well that’s true

How many times
Will she shy away from you
She is one of those
Colored blue
