Skibbereen
Oh, Father dear, I oft times hear you talk of Erin's Isle,
Her lofty scene, her valleys green, her mountains rude and wild
They say it is a pretty place where in a prince might dwell,
Oh, why did you abandon it, the reason to me tell?
Oh, son I loved my native land with energy and pride
'Til a blight came over on my crops, my sheep and cattle died,
The rent and taxes were so high, I could not them redeem,
And that's the cruel reason why I left old Skibbereen.
Oh, It's well I do remember that bleak December day,
The landlord and the sheriff came to drive us all away
They set my roof on fire with their demon yellow spleen
And that's another reason why I left old Skibbereen.
Your mother too, God rest her soul, fell on the snowy ground,
She fainted in her anguish seeing the desolation round.
She never rose but passed away from life to mortal dream,
She found a quiet grave, my bo,y in dear old Skibbereen.
And you were only two years old and feeble was your frame,
I could not leave you with your friends, you bore your father's name,
I wrapped you in my c?m?n the dead of night unseen
I heaved a sigh and said goodbye to dear old Skibbereen

Tir Na Nog" (Land Of Mystique)
by James Connolly
I will sail to the end of the earth for you my love,
Just say the word
To the land of mystique that they call Tir Na Nog
Just say the word
Chorus
Far away across the ocean
All along that great devide
Where the waves they will roll
And the seas will come alive
To have you by my side
We will kindle our fire
And be happy deep inside
Just say the word
We will stroll on the beach
And pick shells for a while
Just say the word
Chorus
We will follow our dreams
And have pure hearts and minds
Just say the word
We will land at a place
That is so hard to find
Just say the word
Chorus
Repeat 1st Verse |

I wish I was in Carrickfergus,
Only for nights in Ballygrant
I would swim over the deepest ocean,
For my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot cross over
And neither have I the wings to fly
I wish I could meet a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over, to my love and die
But in Kilkenny, it is reported,
On marble stones there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her,
But I'll sing no more 'till I get a drink.
For I'm drunk today, and I'm seldom sober,
A handsome rover from town to town,
Ah, but I'm sick now, my days are numbered,
Come all you young men and lay me down.

The Emigrant
by James Connolly
Come all you lads and lassies
Come listen to my song
A tale of emigration
And I won't detain you long
May I pique your interest
Not to cause you much alarm
A story of potatoes
And a famine on a farm
In 1847 when times were really tough
They left in droves from Ireland
And the seas were mighty rough
Arrived at Ellis Island
New Country, make a stand
Trying to make a brand new start
From a lonely blighted land
My Grandad left in earnest
With a suitcase and a prayer
In total desperation
From oppression and being snared
I visit Poppy's gravesite now
To cry and have a laugh
Plant a new potato seed
Which reads his Epitaph
Break ......
The lost verse ...... (must find my notes)
Come all you lads and lassies
Come listen to my song
A tale of emigration
And I won't detain you long
I visit Poppy's gravesite now
To cry and have a laugh
Plant a new potato seed
Which reads his Epitaph

Lyrics
Kilkelly, Ireland, 1860, my dear and loving son John
Your good friend schoolmaster Pat McNamara's so good
as to write these words down.
Your brothers have all got a fine work in England,
the house is so empty and sad
The crop of potatoes is sorely infected,
a third to a half of them bad.
And your sister Brigid and Patrick O'Donnell
are going to be married in June.
Mother says not to work on the railroad
and be sure to come on home soon.
Kilkelly, Ireland, 1870, my dear and loving son John
Hello to your Mrs and to your 4 children,
may they grow healthy and strong.
Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble,
I suppose that he never will learn.
Because of the darkness there's no turf to speak of
and now we have nothing to burn.
And Brigid is happy, we named a child for her
and now she's got six of her own.
You say you found work, but you don't say
what kind or when you will be coming home.
Kilkelly, Ireland, 1880, dear Michael and John, my sons
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news
that your dear old mother has gone.
We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly,
your brothers and Brigid were there.
You don't have to worry, she died very quickly,
remember her in your prayers.
And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning,
with money he's sure to buy land
For the crop has been bad and the people
are selling at every price that they can.
Kilkelly, Ireland, 1890, my dear and loving son John
I suppose that I must be close on eighty,
it's thirty years since goodbye.
Because of all of the money you send me,
I'm still living out on my own.
Michael has built himself a fine house
and Brigid's daughters have grown.
Thank you for sending your family picture,
they're lovely young women and men.
You say that you might even come for a visit,
what joy to see you again.
Kilkelly, Ireland, 1892, my dear brother John
I'm sorry I didn't write sooner to tell you, but father passed on.
He was living with Brigid, she says he was cheerful
and healthy right down to the end.
Ah, you should have seen him play with
the grandchildren of Pat McNamara, your friend.
And we buried him alongside of mother,
down at the Kilkelly churchyard.
He was a strong and a feisty old man,
considering his life was so hard.
And it's funny the way he kept talking about you,
he called for you in the end.
Oh, why don't you think about coming to visit,
we'd all love to see you again.

A Higher Power
by James Connolly
Look at the moon
How bright it glows
With twinkling stars
Around it shows
A power that's greater
Than mankind
A heavenly king
Of endless time
Look at the Sun
With radiant light
A clear blue sky
Serene insight
A friendly face
To warm your heart
Never more to be apart
Look at the baby
Just now born
A fragile life
Into this world
What sweeter gift
For all to see
A higher power
Is there for me
And when it rains
A rear will fall
For just a moment
Taste the salt
And wonder why
It came to be
This life, this love, eternally |
